Feed-in Tariff Update: No Freeze Confirmed for 800,000 UK Households

For the 800,000+ UK households currently benefiting from the Feed-in Tariff (FIT), a period of uncertainty has finally come to an end. The government has officially confirmed that it will not move forward with a proposed freeze on FIT payments. This ensures that existing contracts remain inflation-linked and protected.

This decision comes as a major relief to solar adopters who invested in renewable energy under the promise of long-term, guaranteed returns.

The Decision: CPI vs. RPI

Earlier in the year, proposals suggested freezing feed in tariff rates until they aligned with lower inflation targets. However, the government has chosen a middle-ground approach.

While the freeze was scrapped, the indexation will shift:

The Change: Future payment increases will now be linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rather than the Retail Price Index (RPI).

The Reasoning: The government views CPI as a more accurate measure of modern inflation. By making this switch, they aim to reduce the overall cost of the scheme, which is funded by levies on consumer electricity bills. It seeks to still ensure that solar owners see their payments rise in line with the cost of living.

Why This Matters for the Industry

Beyond the bank accounts of homeowners, this announcement carries significant weight for the entire renewables sector.

Long-term energy schemes rely on investor and consumer confidence. By honouring the spirit of the original FIT contracts, the government is preserving the trust needed to launch future initiatives, such as the upcoming Warm Homes Plan.

The decision strikes a delicate balance, easing the green levy pressure on general energy bills while maintaining fair returns for the early adopters who helped kickstart the UK’s solar revolution.

The Bottom Line

The “No Freeze” confirmation is a win for stability for solar feed in tariff rates. As we move toward a subsidy-free future driven by technological excellence rather than government handouts.
