Tesla Remote Meter

The New ‘Neurio’ is due early summer.

If you attended the Tesla webinar back in early March or one of the Tesla Roadshows (more dates throughout April) you’ll have heard about their newest device, the Remote Meter.

Designed to replacement the Neurio Meter (that provided Dynamic Load Balancing to the charging station) the new Remote Meter works alongside both Powerwall 2 and 3 to accurately monitor and manage energy flow within the home.

It measures voltage and current at key points, such as the grid connection, solar production, and home consumption, ensuring precise tracking of imported, exported, and self-generated energy.

Due in stock early May (and available to pre-order today) the new device works with both single-phase and three-phase systems up to 200A. Its key feature is its ability to support configuration with both AC solar and load upstream of the gateway simultaneously, providing greater flexibility in system design and offering connectivity options for Wi-Fi or RS485.

Key Benefits & Functions:

Precise Energy Measurement

The meter uses voltage taps and Current Transformers (CTs) to track energy flows at different points in the system. This ensures Powerwall 3 can correctly balance solar generation, battery storage, and grid power usage.

Support for Complex Configurations

Installers can place CTs at strategic locations (e.g., upstream of loads or solar inverters) for tailored energy monitoring, allowing Powerwall 3 to optimize performance based on the home’s needs.

Site & Solar Metering

Powerwall 3 requires visibility into two key metrics:
• Site Metering (total power flow to/from the grid)
• Solar Metering (energy generated by solar panels)
If multiple solar inverters are present or direct solar metering isn’t possible, the remote meter ensures no over- or under-estimation of energy usage.

Integration with the Tesla Ecosystem

The meter communicates with Tesla Asset Controller (TACO) via wireless or RS-485 connection, providing real-time data.

Regulatory Compliance & Efficiency

In the UK, energy systems must adhere to grid regulations while maximising efficiency. The meter ensures compliance and helps homeowners reduce energy costs by optimising battery storage and grid interactions.

Enhanced Functionality Over Previous Models

Unlike older Neurio meters, the Tesla Remote Energy Meter is designed specifically for Powerwall 3, offering improved accuracy and compatibility. It supports up to three CTs to accommodate multiple solar arrays or large loads. A fourth addition is planned in future updates too.
