The UK has reached a significant milestone in its journey towards net zero, with renewable sources providing just over half of the country’s electricity in 2024.
This landmark achievement was confirmed by the Department of Energy and Net Zero (DESNZ) in its annual Digest of UK Energy Statistics. The renewable energy record marks a major step forward in the nation’s energy transition.
The data reveals that renewable technologies generated an unprecedented 50.4% of the UK’s electricity last year. This is up from 46.5% in 2023. These figures represent a clear signal that the nation’s growing investment in clean power is beginning to bear fruit. It is also a clear sign that the demise of fossil fuels is inevitable.
The growth from the previous years was powered by renewable stalwarts, wind and solar.
Onshore and offshore wind output both reached record highs, solidifying wind as a dominant force in the UK’s energy mix. With wind generation now at 29.2% of the power mix, it is on the cusp of overtaking gas to become the single largest source of electricity.
Despite a year with lower-than-average sun hours, solar power still delivered its second-highest output on record. This demonstrates the resilience and reliability of solar panel technology.
Is this the decline of fossil fuels?
The report also highlighted a significant decline in the use of fossil fuels. Electricity generation from these sources fell by 16%, accounting for just 31.8% of the total power mix. This was further bolstered by the closure of Britain’s final coal-fired power plant in September 2024. While gas remains the UK’s biggest single power generator for now, its output dropped by 15% from the previous year.
