MCS vs Clint Eastwood: How to stand out in the Solar Wild West?

Unlicensed and inexperienced companies that are installing PV systems are on the rise following increasing demand for solar consequently creating a sort of solar wild west!

Industry expert Gareth Jones said, “The industry has seen a rise in the number of installers popping up out of nowhere and disappearing again, which, if there is an issue with the panels, leaves the customer with nowhere else to go.”

Jones said that people should not buy and attempt to install solar panels themselves while insurance companies recommend that all installations are done by qualified and certified experts.

He emphatically added that “The long-term benefits of renewable energy are positive from an economic and environmental perspective, so people are better doing things the correct way with a credible supplier the first time, so they don’t have to do it again at extra cost.”

Freedom of Information

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that fire crews battled around 10 solar-panel related fires across the UK each month in 2022.  “The average solar PV system claim can cost around £8,000, in fact one single claim in 2020 caused £1.5million of damage and made 30 people temporarily homeless at a block of flats in Kent” Jones also shared.

Jones also went on to also discuss the difference between a 10-year warranty and a 10-year guarantee. Basically the guarantee is done by an insurance company while the warranty is provided by the installation company, but this is useless if the installer no longer exists.
