EV Charging Strategy

British Government EV Charging Strategy

– Is it enough?

The British government revealed the new EV charging strategy in recent weeks.

The ambition of the Government is that the number of EV chargers will increase tenfold by 2030, this would mean 300,000 public charges would be available for UK drivers by the end of the decade. These numbers might seem impressive; however, it is being debated if this will be enough to reach the new goals identified in the British Energy Security Strategy.

The Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps is an EV driver and noted that not everyone has access to off-street parking like himself, so the Government must focus on the new EV charging strategy. Providing convenience and affordable on-street charging points such as integrated units into lamp posts and next to parking bays will be key.

Current EV statistics express that there are only 1,000 on-street chargers available outside of London and that every tenth car on UK roads is electric. These statistics highlight the importance of drastic improvements to happen within the infrastructure to support the goals set out by the Government.

The Government has stated that they will be investing £500 million to bring ‘high quality, competitively priced public charge points’ to communities across the UK. The Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund is currently being piloted in the UK. To be eligible for the LEVI fund the project must include on-street slow, fast charge points, solar canopies, and battery storage.

The road ahead for adequate EV charge points in the UK can be seen as a long process. Nevertheless Segen has a selection of EV chargers to help reach the Government’s fivefold ambitions.
