Quernmore Primary School, Lancashire

Quernmore Primary School, near Lancaster, is a Green Flag winning Eco-School, committed to protecting the environment. An Iskra 5KW wind turbine was installed on the site in November 2007, providing the school with clean, renewable electricity and reducing their carbon footprint.

"Fantastic!", "Brilliant!", "Amazing!", "Cool!", "Awesome!" are just some of the words the children used when asked to describe their wind turbine.  How true!  It's educational, inspirational and saves money too!”
Jane Haythorne – Quernmore School

Outdoors, the installation features a digital display giving information about energy generation and C02 savings, as well as large display board explaining the system. Indoors, a wireless Sunny Beam device provides pupils with a constant stream of data about system performance and allows energy yield and C02 reductions be carefully monitored over the long term.

The project was 100% grant funded. LCBP Phase 2 covered 30% (the maximum available at the time) and our grant-finding service was used to secure the remaining 70% from the Forest of Bowland Sustainable Development Fund, Lancashire County Council Environmental Projects Team and Triodos Renewables.

The Project Information Display Board (left) gives pupils and visitors information about the wind turbine system, the motivations behind the project and the organisations and companies that helped make the project a reality.

The Digital LCD Display provides real-time data about energy generation and C02 reductions.

Warren Park Primary School, Hampshire

Warren Park Primary School in Havant, Hampshire installed an 8-panel, 2.10kWp system with a display panel highlighting power generation and CO2 savings.  Warren Park installed the panels on its newly built ecological classroom, with funding support from Hampshire County Council and an area investment fund.

“We use the new ecological classroom for our dedicated outdoor curriculum, this includes studying the environment and climate change,” explains headmaster. The PV panels are just one of the exciting innovations in the building, which includes a heat wall and PIR lights that alter wattage subject to natural light sources. Our aim is to teach the community as well as the children about our changing environment.”

Other Sites

Segen and our partners have installed many small wind turbines, Solar PV and hydro systems across England, Wales and Scotland at School and Community locations, and each one is indicated on the map below. You can view further information on any one you select which will show you a summary of the site and a picture of the installation.

Many of these owners are happy to allow a site visit and Segen run numerous open days each year at these sites.

We will continue to add to this collection over the coming months, so please return in a while to see how the number of installations is growing.
