Green Energy for Agriculture - "Clean, Affordable & Reliable"

Economic and environmental issues are at the top of the agenda for Britain’s agricultural industry.

The pressure to produce food in a sustainable way while remaining competitive on price means that farmers are looking for innovative new ways of sourcing their energy.

Small wind turbines are an excellent option for many UK farms. Britain has the best wind resource in Europe, and many of the windiest parts of the country are farmland. A turbine makes use of this natural resource and once installed provides a long-term source of free, renewable energy - as well as being a visible symbol of a farm’s commitment to protecting the environment.

A wind turbine allows you to:

  1. Save the cost of the energy that you generate for yourself and when you export your surplus back to the grid

  2. Have power from the wind, even when your grid connection has failed, or where there is no grid

  3. Supplement the power from the grid when your needs are greater than your connection capacity

Grants

Many regions of the UK now offer grants to rural businesses for small wind turbines, usually funded from the EU's Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. These grants are administered via the UK's regional development agencies. Typically grants may be £10,000 - £30,000 or up to 40% of the total cost, but vary across the country.

Grants can significantly reduce the capital expenditure required to get a turbine up and running and result in a much quicker 'payback' on the money you do need to invest.

The grants situation in some areas still evolving and Segen have local staff who will be able to advise on what's available to you. Please visit our regional information pages or contact Segen for more information.

Turbine Technologies

Evance Iskra R9000

The Evance Iskra R9000 is suitable for smaller farms, especially in windier areas, where its efficiency and performance across a range of wind speeds make it ideal for generating power whenever the wind is blowing.

The Iskra is designed and built in the UK and incorporates the latest small-turbine technology. The advanced blade pitch control mechanism allows it to generate power in wind speeds from as low as 6.7mph right up to 134mph. Competitor's products shut down or reduce output when the wind is blowing it's hardest - just when they should be producing their maximum.

Gaia Wind 11kW

The Gaia 133 has an exceptionally large rotor diameter and therefore swept area, meaning it produces a large amount of energy even on low-to-medium wind speed sites.

Designed and built in Denmark, the Gaia is based on the same technical principles as full-size turbines with a geared generator providing a constant rpm irrespective of wind speed. This aids reliability and reduces aerodynamic noise output.

Perfect for large farms with a 3-phase power supply, a Gaia can dramatically reduce the long-term energy costs and CO2 emissions of your farm.

Next Steps

Most farms offer an ideal location for a small wind turbine, so enter your postcode into our free wind speed checker to find out how much energy you could be generating each year from the wind.

Segen hold regular events and open days that allow anyone interested in wind energy to visit our existing installations and talk to their local representative. Please have a look at our events page or contact contact us for more information.
