The pressure to produce food in a sustainable way while remaining competitive on price means that farmers are looking for innovative new ways of sourcing their energy.

Small wind turbines are an excellent option for many UK farms. Britain has the best wind resource in Europe, and many of the windiest parts of the country are farmland. Many regions of the UK now offer grants to rural businesses for small wind turbines, usually funded from the EU's Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. These grants are administered via the UK's regional development agencies. Typically grants may be £10,000 - £30,000 or up to 40% of the total cost, but vary across the country.

Grants can significantly reduce the capital expenditure required to get a turbine up and running and result in a much quicker 'payback' on the money you do need to invest.
