Vestas V27 and V39 - Serious Power Generation

Segen can now offer a 225kW and 500kW fully reconditioned wind turbines from the long established Danish manufacturer, Vestas.

The V27 and V39 are well tried and tested products with many thousands of installations world wide, and Segen is very pleased to have secured supplies of these turbines in excellent condition from Denmark.

The 225kW Vestas V27 is ideally suited to the more power hungry needs of larger farms, community projects, council premises and commercial properties, generating approximately 400MWh per year on an typical site, and more in windier locations.

The 500kW V39 produces twice the power and energy capture of the V27 satisfying the more demanding power requirements generating approximately 750MWh a year on a typical site.

Segen ensures the quality of all the turbines we source and all undergo a rigorous re-conditioning process before we install them. These turbines have been in operation in Denmark for a number of years and are now available due to generous incentives from the Danish Government to replace them with much larger turbines well before the end of their expected service life.

Segen offers these turbines will a full 5 year warranty and all inclusive service program, ensuring complete peace of mind that the turbine will be operational during the expected payback period. It may be expected however that these turbines will last for many more years if properly maintained.

The V27 is normally supplied on an 31m free standing tower and the V39 on a 40m tower, thereby maximising the energy available from this larger machine and connects to a three phase supply.

The V27 and V39 are most suited to modest to large sized industrial applications, especially where the majority of the energy would be consumed on-site, rather than exported to the grid. This both maximises the cost savings and reduces any electrical connection costs there may be. You should however only consider a V27 if your existing electrical connection is rated for in excess of 225kW, and the V39 if your connection is rated in excess of 500kW. Grid connection can be upgraded at additional cost.

The amount of annual energy a V27 or V39 will generate is of course related to the wind speed at the site, which can vary considerably across the country. A site with an Annual Mean Wind Speed (AMWS) of 6m/s the V27 would generate approximately 400MWh per annum and the V39 750MWh per annum. At a site with with an AMWS of 7m/s the V27 would generate over 575MWh and the V39 1,100MWh.

Segen provides a quick wind speed checker that uses the DTI's NOABL database to estimate the wind speed at your location, based on a computer model of the wind speed at 25m high. It is important to note that the AMWS at 25m will be a lot higher than the more normally quoted figure at 10m/s.

The fully installed cost of a V27 is around £285,000, depending upon site conditions and electrical connection requirements. For the V39 the installed cost is around £550,000. The expected savings/revenue will vary from £40,000 - £60,000 for the V27, and £80,000 - £100,000 for the V39 depending upon the wind resource and the use of the energy generated.

Power Curve

The Vestas V27 is rated by the manufacturer as 225kW and the V39 at 500kW both at 16m/s.

All annual energy estimates provided by Segen are based upon a 31m and 40m tower for the V27 and V39 respectively.

Shown to the right is the measured power curve for the Vestas V27 and V39.

Availability

Segen is now taking enquiries for the Vestas V27 and V39 with an expected lead time of 3 - 6 months from order.

Other Reconditioned Turbines

Generally Segen is able to offer a number of different models, sizes and tower heights of re-conditioned turbines. The price and availability of specific models varies constantly over time so it is not possible to list all the different turbines here. We can however usually source turbines from 75kW - 600kW with tower heights from 20m - 45m.

Segen Feasibility Study

The site specific requirements for turbines of this size need detailed investigation before a decision to go ahead should be considered, or a planning application submitted.

A member of Segen staff will visit your site and using a number of different techniques assess the suitability of your proposed location for a medium sized wind turbine. A detailed report will be generated and sent to you, which will contain:

  1. An assessment of the potential wind resource, by using the NOABL database and then applying adjustments specific to the local circumstances. This will be a more accurate estimate than can be obtained just from the NOABL database alone. Consideration will be given to the local terrain, e.g. hills and valleys as well as nearby buildings. The wind speed assessment will be provided for a range of possible tower heights for turbines likely to be appropriate for the site.
  2. The identification of any issues which might impact the installation of a small wind turbine, e.g. site access, ground conditions, electrical connection, cable routes etc. Turbines of this scale can only be connected to a three phase supply which must be adequate for the expected energy generation. Segen will contact your electricity supply company for an initial consultation on their likely requirements to allow a connection of the various sizes of turbine which may be suitable.
  3. Advice on the possible locations within the site for a turbine, taking into account the best location for wind, noise, shadow flicker, safety, site access and the least impact on the surrounding properties and views. Where appropriate, more than one location may be considered and discussed in the resultant document.
  4. Detailed site measurements and photographs which can subsequently be used for a planning application or full quotation for the installation. Segen will make contact with the local authority to ascertain what their likely response to a planning application at your site would be, and what their requirements, e.g. environmental impact assessment, bird or bat survey, local noise measurements, would be for a full planning application and what their charges would likely be.
  5. An energy generation estimation including how much energy you would be expected to use within the property, and how much would be likely to be exported to the grid. This will normally be provided for up to 3 different types of turbine and tower height. You will be asked to provide copies of your last 12 months of electricity bills and any expected changes in your electricity demand into the future. Segen will contact 3 possible electricity suppliers to obtain estimates of current electricity sale and purchase prices for your site.
  6. Details of the required ground works for the installation of the turbine, normally sufficient for you to obtain a quotation for that aspect of the project, either from Segen or a local contractor. The initial feasibility study will not include a detailed ground conditions report, but based on visual inspection and whatever local information can be obtained, any likely potential issues will be highlighted.
  7. Depending upon the results of the feasibility study, Segen will recommend what your next actions should be. These might include more detailed discussions with the local authority or electricity supply company, a detailed ground conditions report or installation of a wind monitoring mast.

You will be sent the report and a full project estimate of costs within a few weeks of the visit.

Segen make a modest charge of £2,875 + VAT for this feasibility study. Please contact Segen should you wish to arrange a visit.
