| The South West Region of EnglandThe South West region covers the area from Cornwall up to Gloucestershire and across to Wiltshire. The South West, through a regional agency, RegenSW, provides very active support for renewable energy projects, including small wind. The South West is also one of the windiest regions of England and is therefore has many excellent locations for small wind turbines. For a concise guide to how a wind turbine project works, please download our 4-page PDF guide for farmers in the South West.
| The South West's Renewables for Farms (R4F), offering up to £10,000 grants for renewable energy systems for eligible farm businesses, will be launched in early 2009. The funding is part of the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) which is a £3.9 billion programme of economic, environmental and social measures designed to develop farming in the South West over the next six years. Full details of this programme will be released shortly on the The South West of England Rural Development Gateway Web Site. |
This page contains information that you may find useful when considering a small wind project in the South West and we would welcome your comments and suggestions on how to improve it. From July 2008 onwards, grants are available for domestic microgeneration to all residents of Gloucestershire (Gloucester City, Cheltenham Borough, Cotswold District, Stroud District, Tewkesbury Borough, and Forest of Dean District). The grant limit is £1,000 and up to two technologies are covered. Gloucestershire County Council and District Councils have together contributed £110,000 for domestic renewable energy grants in the financial year to 31st March 2009. This will fund 110 domestic renewable energy installation grants at £1,000 each, allocated on a first come first served basis, with a minimum of 10 installations ring-fenced for each District. Wind ResourceThe map below will give you an indication of where the strongest wind areas are in the South West. The areas shaded in red, green and yellow are considered excellent for wind projects, but much of the rest of the South West provides adequate wind resource for a small wind installation to be viable.
