Which grants are available?

The types and amounts of funding available for purchasing and installing a renewable energy system depend on the purchaser and the area. Renewable energy installations can receive funding from several sources.

Domestic

The Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) managed by the Energy Saving Trust provides grants for domestic properties but with some required criteria:

  1. £1,000 per kW installed for a small wind turbine, or £2,000 per kWp for a PV system, up to a maximum of £2,500 per household, or 30% of the total installed cost.
  2. The grant must be spent within 4 months of being awarded.
  3. The property must meet a minimum level of energy efficiency e.g. 270mm loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, basic central heating controls (timer & thermostat) and low energy light bulbs as appropriate.
  4. You must have planning permission before you apply for a grant.

You will normally be entitled to £2,500 from the LCBP for the Iskra AT5-1, Westwind 20 and our PV systems.

The Kestrel and Skystream are not yet registered under the LCBP program.

The application process is relatively simple and quick and Segen will provide you with all the information you need to complete the application form.

For grants to be awarded, all installations must be carried out by a registered installer under the DTI's Clear Skies programme or the new Microgeneration Certification Scheme. Segen’s registered Clear Skies installer number is: 2139726.

The scheme will run until June 2010, or as long as funds are available, whichever is the sooner.

Community Schemes

The Low Carbon Buildings Programme Phase II offers grants to Community Schemes, and there are many other organisations that may provide additional funding support for specific community projects some of which are listed below.

Grants from the LCBP Phase II of 50% are available for the Iskra AT5-1 small wind turbine and all our solar PV systems. Segen will help you secure these grants through our relationships with a number of the framework providers.

The following types of organisation should qualify for a LCBP Phase II grant;

- Local authorities

- Housing associations and trusts

- Hospitals

- Schools

- Universities and colleges

- Libraries

- Public service organisations

- Registered charities

- Environmental trusts

- Local community groups governed by written constitution

- Community Amateur Sports Clubs

Please contact Segen for advice on the type and sources of funding that your project may be eligible for and assistance with completing applications for funding. You may however like to contact directly some of the following organisations below who look favourably on community applications for small wind turbines.

The Trust is designed to assist the creation of new renewable energy sources in the UK, encourage research and development of renewable electricity sources and promote education in the community on new renewable energy generation

Funding will be provided to non profit or charitable organisations and or organisations involved in education and or work at community level to cover the costs associated with the installation of small-scale renewable technology and a proportion of the funding requested may be used for educational purposes (Up to 20%). Funding may also be requested for feasibility studies into the installation of small-scale renewable technology.

There will be a maximum grant value of £30,000 (Thirty Thousand Pounds) for installations. Contact: Nigel.French@EDFEnergy.com
