Feasibility studies

Staff at Hydro GenerationThe aim of a feasibility study is to establish if a site is suitable for a micro-hydro development.

Following an initial telephone consultation to ensure all the basic elements are in place, e.g. head and flow, we would visit site to undertake a full site survey.

A feasibility study is split into two parts.

Part 1 – Site visit and survey

This involves a full day's on-site investigation by an experienced member of Hydro Generation's engineering team.

  1. ‘Walk the site’ to understand the existing site layout.
  2. Take accurate measurement of all relevant levels across site.
  3. Review all existing hydropower infrastructure.
  4. Make detailed photographic record of all relevant features.
  5. Identify most suitable grid connection point.
  6. Discussion with client on site potential and options for development (if required).

If following the site visit you decide not to proceed to Part 2 of the study no further costs for Part 2 of the project will be incurred.

Part 2 – Data processing and production of final report

Using all the information gathered from the site survey and additional information from the Environment Agency  we will produce a full feasibility report on your site's suitability for a micro-hydro installation.

  1. Use long-term flow data (if available) and/or LowFlows hydrological modelling software to produce an estimated flow duration curve for the site.
  2. Specify most appropriate turbine type and size.
  3. Discuss most suitable location for the hydro system.
  4. Outline civil engineering works required.
  5. Specify transmission and generator type.
  6. Specify method of grid connection.
  7. Calculate expected power output, annual energy production and value of electricity produced.
  8. Estimate total project cost, broken down into stages and individual pieces of hardware.
  9. Define all stages of the project and likely timescales
  10. Identify potential sources of funding.
Arranging a Feasibility Study

If you would like to discuss the options for a micro-hydro system at your property then please read the Estimating Head and Flow Guide and then submit your site details using our Contact Form.
