Helping to Meet Kyoto Targets
One of Segen's primary aims is to help governments achieve Kyoto targets. While these targets may at times appear difficult to achieve, meeting them seems even more important than previously imagined.
We understand and support the need for governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable energy provision in the form of clean fuel sources. We also understand the need for public finance to be used prudently and effectively.
As an Independent Power Provider (IPP), Segen can apply our technological expertise and entrepreneurial know-how to help European governments meet their targets while driving down the cost of sustainable energy production in the years ahead.
All countries in the EU have targets for greenhouse gas reduction that have now been ratified. In the United Kingdom in 2000, HM Government's Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution predicted the target reduction for greenhouse gases in the UK, expressed as C02 equivalents: 60% by 2050, and 80% by 2100, based on 1990 levels. Naturally it is important to meet current targets as there are even more stringent ones ahead.
It should however be noted that economic growth and the development of a low carbon, low emission economy are not mutually exclusive objectives. DEFRA for example in the UK have recently pointed out that, since 1992, UK emissions have reduced overall by 15% and yet the economy has grown by 36%.
Sustainable energy policy can therefore be considered to be at the heart of sustainable, social, economic and environmental development.
