Biodiesel |
The CHP systems sold by Segen run off 100% biodiesel produced from crops or animal products, e.g. tallow or rapeseed, and the energy generated is therefore 100% renewable. You need to specify "B100" (being 100% biodiesel) conforming to EN14214:2003. This should not be confused with "B5" which is commonly available, but is only 5% renewable and 95% normal diesel.
The fuel is becoming more commonly available across the UK and you can now be assured of a regular and quality supply. Two example suppliers you may like to contact for prices and availability are:
- Future Fuels: http://www.biodiesel-fuel.co.uk
- Argent Energy: http://www.argentenergy.com
Typically you would purchase quantities of 1,000l or more and the current market price is around 50p per litre.
There is no duty payable on biodiesel used in a CHP system and VAT may be charged at only 5%.
You will also need a storage tank for your biodiesel. Typically these would be hold 2,000 - 20,000l depending upon your requirements and would be filled up from a tanker.
The electricity generated by your biodiesel CHP system should fully qualify for ROCs (Renewable Obligation Certificates) and with a typical installation generating 100MWh per year you may expect to get 100 ROCs with a value of approximately £40 each, so a possible total of £4,000 per year. It is expected that the new energy bill about to go through Parliament will increase this to 2 ROCs per MWh and therefore increasing the potential revenue to around £8,000 per year.
